- decrease hematopoietic precursor cells pancytopenia
- causes
- drug-induced (chloramphenicol, carbamazepine, valproate, phenytoin)
- viral infection (parvovirus B19, HIV, hepatitis), especially in patients w/ sickle cell disease or immunocompromise
- autoimmune
- congenital (Fanconi anemia)
