Background
- Definition: existence of the excess fluid in the lower extremity resulting in swelling of the feet and extending upward
- Further classified as pitting (depress-able) and non-pitting
Causes
- Increased hydrostatic pressure
- Decreased oncotic pressure
- Increased capillary permeability
- Lymphatic obstruction
