Not to be confused with chlamydophila, another genus of pathogenic bacteria
Background
- Most frequently reported STD
- Age < 25 most prevalent group
- Asymptomatic in > 50% of infected individuals
Clinical Features
- Vaginal discharge
- Intermenstrual bleeding
- Urethritis
- Epididymitis
- Proctitis
- Reiter syndrome (urethritis, conjuctivitis, rash)
Complications
- PID
- Ectopic Pregnancy
- Infertility
Differential Diagnosis
Workup
- Urine pregnancy
- Speculum exam
- Endocervical or urethral swab
Treatment
- Azithromycin 1g PO x 1 OR
- Doxycycline 100mg PO BID x 7 days
NB:
- avoid sex for 7 days to prevent transmission
- sexual partners should be referred for testing and treatment
