History

In continuous operation and fully accreditited since 1974, the emergency medicine residency at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital (WFBH) is the oldest EM residency program in the southeast and one of the founding programs in the country. They are proud of their history but even more excited about their future. Although they are a well-established program, they continually strive to stay on the cutting edge of clinical emergency medicine, education, and research.

Wake Forest Emergency Medicine is a university-based training program located in Winston-Salem, NC. The medical center, which consistently ranks among the nations best, is a Level I trauma center nestled in a residential community in one of the South's most livable cities, Winston-Salem, NC. The hospital is an 830-bed tertiary care institution affiliated with the Wake Forest School of Medicine. All specialties and sub-specialties are represented. The medical center is both a level I adult & pediatric trauma center, has an annual volume of >100,000 patient visits and sees the entire spectrum of human illness. WFBH is also a burn, stroke and cardiovascular emergency center.

Their goal is to train high quality emergency physicians who are capable of practicing emergency medicine in whatever setting they choose and become leaders within the specialty.
